TRE on DVD

I’m a great fan of the work of Eric Byler and it was a distinct pleasure to interview Eric when Tre screened at the 2007 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Now available on DVD , Ben Hamamoto has written a piece for Nichi Bei Times emphasizing Tre ‘s “landmark” status as the first film directed by hapa writer/directors Kimberly-Rose Wolter and Eric Byler to feature hapa romantic leads, Wolter and Daniel Cariaga. The DVD release of Tre features a seven-chapter Q&A commentary by Byler wherein he waxes eloquent on many aspects of his filmmaking process, including how “hybrid identity” folds into the layers of meaning in his films.  Other DVD bonus features include a behind-the-scenes documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Reuben Aaronson, and the inclusion of Eric’s student film, Kenji’s Faith . This is all excellent news in and of itself, but I’ve likewise been meaning to single out Eric’s consummate filmwork activismmost recently in support of the Obama campaignfor which he and his committed collaborators have created a YouTube channel “United For Obama” wherein Eric’s various videos have been compiled for easy reference and appreciation. Cross-published on The Evening Class .  read more »

A crowd has gathered in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center, where a security guard is about to unlock the main entrance. It's less than a minute before 9 am, the official opening of the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters Show—typically a sleepy sales and marketing event known more for schmoozing than buzz. But as the glass doors open on this April morning, a hundred people race toward a large crimson tent in the center of the hall.  read more »

An Exclusive First Look At Adam Masons LUSTER!

We’ve been keeping an eye on Luster , the latest from Devil’s Chair , Broken and Blood River writer-director duo of Simon Boyes and Adam Mason - regular podcasters on this site - and today our patience was rewarded with an exclusive first look at the sales promo for the picture.  Now, this is not a trailer per se, but a reel prepared to present and sell the film at the recently concluded American Film Market.  It hasn’t been through post production yet so it’s still a bit ragged around the edges in parts but it’s more than enough to show that Mason has taken a surprising direction with this one, leaving the intense horror of his previous pictures behind in favor of absurd black comedy. Thomas Luster is a troubled businessman who tries to make sense of a life being driven out-of-control by a force closer to home than he first realizes.  When he discovers that the man working against him is another side of his own personality he is forced to fight back against his manipulative alter-ego as murder, madness and mayhem combine to take Thomas Luster on the most bizarre and terrifying ride of his life. Andrew Howard - The Devil’s Chair and Blood River - stars.  Check the promo out in the Twitch Player below the break.  read more »
